À travers la visite, via sa grande créativité, l'artiste redevient Fred-la-terreur, l'enfant pauvre qui passait ses journées à scruter le gravier de sa cour pour y dénicher des pierres précieuses. Il revit alors les balbutiements de son histoire d'amitié avec Agate qui se prenait pour Marylin Monroe, et témoigne de la relation avec sa mère colorée - mais à la santé fragile - qui le surnommait affectueusement son petit Poucet.

The main character is a mischievous child with a vivid imagination whose mother suffers from a medical condition that leaves her weakened. While practising throwing stones, he hits a seagull, which later dies from its injuries.
